Temple Run 2: Tips & Tricks Everyone Should Know

Here are some excellent gameplay tips from onClan. I'm pleased to show you how to maximize your experience.

Temple Run 2 by Imangi Studios’ is a game where you continuously run through various obstacles to try and get the highest score possible before you die. Gamezebo’s quick start strategy guide will provide you with detailed images, tips, information, and hints on how to play your best game.

Quick Start Guide
  •     To download the game, click the “Play Now” button at the top of this page.
  •     Once downloaded, click the “play” button.
  •     That’s it! You’re ready to start the game!
How to Play:

  • Shield: In the top left corner of the screen is your “shield” meter.  One of the elements of the game is that as you collect the coins (more on those shortly) during your run, your shield meter increases.  From there, you can double tap the screen and activate a shield that will protect you from most of the obstacles in the game—the exception being it will not save you from falling off the plain of play.  These aren’t terribly common in comparison to other obstacles, so the shield is fairly useful in getting you further in the game and increasing your score.
  • Score: In the top right corner of the screen is the score meter.  The score will automatically increase as you move along in the game, and grabbing coins will increase your score substantially as well.
  • Coins:  Scattered liberally throughout your run are coins.  In the top right corner of the screen just under the high score is your coin count during the run.  The coins will be on the right hand, middle, or left hand side.  Grabbing them is a matter of using the accelerometer

  • Movement: In the above screenshot you can see one of the common obstacles that you will encounter in the game.  You have four swipe options—you can swipe up to jump, down to slide, and then left or right to turn when your path runs out.  In this case, you can only slide under to progress—there are a few that you can either slide or jump over (fire comes to mind), and all of the obstacles are fairly straightforward and logical in what you need to do.
  • Movement (Accelerometer): The last control scheme is Temple Run 2’s accelerometer support.  It is fairly basic, as you move your phone around to go from left to right to collect coins, or further in your run where you cart ride.

  • Cart Riding: When you get a bit further in your run, you’ll encounter a cart that you’ll hop in and ride along the rails.  You’ll have similar obstacles as when you’re running, meaning you’ll have to jump or duck under obstacles.  The only wrinkle to this cart is the part where you have to use the accelerometer to curve around bends.  It’s somewhat tricky to navigate, actually, as on the curves it might take you a bit to realize that you should not completely tilt your phone.  If you do, you’ll fall off the rails.  Instead, just slightly tilt the phone and you’ll be fine.

  • Levels: As you complete runs, you’ll level up your character and get various bonuses.  There isn’t really anything to the levels outside of the bonuses, but they can be used for other upgrades that can actually support you in the game.

  • Abilities: As you run through the game and collect coins, you’ll earn enough to upgrade these various abilities.  These will allow you to get further along in the game, boost your score and get more coins to get further upgrades

  • Ape: If you swipe to the right or the left too early, you’ll bump into the sides of the level and it will spawn in this giant ape to run behind you.  If you hit any other obstacles, the ape will grab you and eat you for dinner—so don’t do that.  It’s fairly easy to not have your run ended by the ape, unless, of course, you’re trying to take screenshots of the game for your dedicated readers!
  • Save Me!: Each time you die you have the option to use the “save me”, which is essentially a new lease on life.  There is no point decrease for using the save me, but it will cost you gems that can be collected throughout your run, or purchased for money.  Each time you die increases the gems you have to use to continue (1, 2, 4, and so on for each death).

  • Missions: At any given time you have three different objectives that will help you level up your character and get the much coveted level bonuses.  These try to have you playing the game in different ways rather than just the straight-up high-score mindset.

  • In-Game Upgrades: As you run there are number of upgrades you can jump up and get which will help you get a higher score.  They are: shields, coin magnets and distance boost.  The shield has already been mentioned earlier in the guide, coin magnets allow you to pick up every coin for a set period of time without running over it directly, and then distance boost that will leapfrog you forward a good chunk of meters.
 Tips:
  • Upgrades or Bust: You’re not going to get a high score to make a dent in your friend’s leaderboards if you don’t upgrade your abilities.  Make sure that you focus on the coin upgrades first and foremost, then make sure that you focus on score multiplier increases, then pickup spawns.  From there, it doesn’t really matter.
  • Reaction Time and Sitting Position: At the later stages of this game, the game speed really picks up and it really comes down to your ability to react.  Ideally, you’ll be sitting when you’re playing this game, or sitting on your stomach.  Lying on your back while playing the game messes with the accelerometer.  Sad but true.

Congratulations!

You have completed onClan’s quick start guide for Temple Run 2! You should be all set on your way to play your best game! And that’s it! Feel free to post your own special tips  here, or let me know if you disagree with a strategy you see here. I’m all ears.

Temple Run/Cheats and glitches

iOS cheat codes

For iOS versions of the game before version 1.4, you can use the keyboard at the title screen. Since the 1.4 update, that feature has been disabled on all but jailbroken phones and the iPad Touch. "samhines86" unlocks permanent invincibility and "rxh7nigh" unlocks the characters.

Infinite run

During the tutorial (turn tutorial to on in options), quickly swipe multiple times during a turn and the camera will flip around and you'll be on an infinite straightaway with no turns or obstacles. You score will continue to go up and you can collect coins through the Mega Coin powerup, but you can't keep either because the tutorial starts over if you kill yourself by running into the wall.

Temple Run Walktrough

Temple Run centers around a group of wandering explorers, where one of the characters, whom you control, steals an idol from an ancient temple. You control the character's movements after they have stolen the idol. Immediately upon acquiring the idol, you are pursued by a group of malignant demonic monkeys who chase you out of the temple, thus initiating a "temple run".

There is no finish line nor are there levels; the object of the game is to run as far as possible by avoiding obstacles that require you to either jump, duck, or turn in a precise manner. While running you can also collect coins and powerups. You die from being caught by the monkeys that are chasing you, but there are numerous ways that can happen. Running into most obstacles will stop you completely, allowing the monkeys to catch you. Some obstacles will just make you stumble, which allows the monkeys to get close to you, but not catch you. If you run well, you will get back ahead of the monkeys, however if you stumble again while the monkeys are right behind you, they will catch you. You will also be caught by failing to turn with the path, falling off the path or making a turn in a direction that the path breaks.

Controls
  •     Jump: Swipe upward
  •     Slide: Swipe downward
  •     Turn left or right: Swipe left or right
  •     Move to left or right side of path: Tilt left or right
  •     Activate Resurrect utility: Double-tap screen

Display

The camera is behind your character, who appears to be running away from you down the path during the game. The path takes up the majority of the screen, showing a limited amount of the path ahead so you can make decisions on avoiding obstacles and choosing which direction to turn. In the upper left hand corner is your bonus meter, which fills up and gives you a point bonus for every 100 coins you collect.

In the upper right hand corner of the screen are two counters and your Resurrect display. The top counter is your score and the one right below it is your coins. If you have a Resurrect utility, a pair of wings will display below the coin counter letting you know you can use them. The wings disappear when you use them, but will come back after 1,000 meters if you have more in your stock.

The last display item is in the lower right hand corner below the golden. You can use this pause button to pause the game. When you come back from a pause or back from leaving the game while in the middle of a run, you will start where you left off after a 3-2-1 countdown.

Obstacles

As you run different obstacles will be in your way, forcing you to move your character to avoid them. Some obstacles have multiple options for avoiding them, and the tutorial may only show you one way.

How to Avoid Cause of Stumbling Cause of Death
Gaps Jump Landing near the edge Falling into it
Landing near the edge while stumbling
Large tree roots Jump N/A Running into it

Terrain

There are three types of terrain you will be running on and not every terrain has every type of obstacle.

Brick path Middle
  • It is the starting area for the runner
  • The path contains every type of obstacle except for stone gates, tree trunks are relatively uncommon, and small and large tree roots are very common

  • The path may give long straightaways instead of a long series of quick turns
Wooden path Low
  • The runner be safely dropped down to this path, but it trickier to come back up to a different terrain
  • The path contains every type of obstacle except for tree trunks
  • The path may give a long series of quick turns instead of long straightaways
Stone path High
  • Running to either side too far of the narrow path may result in death
  • The path contains only gaps and tree trunks as obstacles
  • The path may give a long series of quick turns instead of long straightaways

How to Resurrect in Temple Run

Temple Run is a single player app available for tablets, smartphones and iPods. It involves being chased by monkeys while trying not to fall or trip to your death off the hair-raising paths and bridges.

Steps

1. Buy resurrecting wings from the shop. You'll need 500 coins collected from your runs.

2. Use the wings when you play. To do this:
  • Either double tap on your character and the wings will appear.
  • Or, there is usually a small bar at the top with the wings symbol on it. Tap on this and the wings will come into use.

3. Keep playing. If you do fall or get caught by monkeys, the wings will resurrect you at the point this happened.
  •     Note that the wings eventually fade, so if this happens before you fall or get caught, you can't resurrect with that set but will need to start all over again.

How to Get a Super High Score on Temple Run 2

Steps

1. Start your run. Make sure you have enough gems for three save-me's.

2. Use the biggest initial boost you can afford. Choose either from the 2500 coins or the 10000 coins one. The latter being the most efficient.

3. Stay calm. Maybe sip a drink or something as you play. Total concentration is not necessary

4. Get used to sliding under objects rather that jumping over them, apart from the ones where you need to jump, of course.

 5. Get a matte textured screen protector. It really helps to swipe quicker.

6. If you find the man is running too fast as you get further on in the game, trip on a tree root or pile of tiles on purpose. this slows you down. Don't do it twice though, the monkey will eat you.

7. Aim for the multipliers! these are key to getting a really high score early on in the game.

How to Play Temple Run 2

Temple Run 2 is based on the same concept as the first Temple Run but has some new elements added to the game. It's available on the App Store or the Google Play Store for free!

Part 1

Playing the Game

1. Launch the game. After a few seconds of loading, the game’s intro page will finally appear. Here, you can either tinker with the game’s menu or start the game immediately.

2. Observe the layout. Temple Run 2 has a simple user interface, familiarize yourself with the buttons and other stuff on the screen before you make your first run. Believe me, once you start running – you won’t be able to look anywhere else except for the track ahead of you.

3. Do the tutorial. Your run begins right at the very start of the game. Evil monkeys are after you so you better keep running! The objective of the game is to run away from the evil monkeys while avoiding obstacles along the way. There will be a short tutorial at the early start of your run so don’t worry.
  • The tutorial will teach you how to jump across gaps. This can be done by swiping your finger upwards across the screen.
  • To turn to either left or right, you just have to swipe the screen on the direction you want to turn.
  • You can also slide by swiping your screen downwards. This move is useful in going through low pathways.
  • You can also tilt your device so your runner can move either to the left, right, or center part of the way.

4. Collect coins. If you see coins, tilt your phone to the directions where the coins are at. These coins are very important in improving your power-ups, performance, and other factors that will give you an advantage in running more efficiently in Temple Run 2. They can also be used to access some unlockables!

5. Get that power-up. While running, you will eventually find power-ups along the way. Grab these power-ups if you have the chance for they will give you certain skills that will help you run further into the game. These power-ups are temporary so better take advantage of their effect while they last.

6. Complete objectives. There are other objectives available in Temple Run 2 other than just collecting mileage in running. Satisfying objectives such as collecting gems, coins, and certain mileage will give you extra bonuses, too!

7. Try again. Since this game is primarily a game of collecting distance – it is safe to say that it does not have an ending. You will just keep on running and soon enough find yourself falling or bumping into a tree trunk. In short - it is game over. The game over screen gives you a couple of options.
  •     You can post your stats online via Twitter or Facebook.
  •     Access your Upgrades page and use your resources to improve your runner’s skills.
  •     You can adjust certain settings via Menu.
  •     You can also simply choose to pick yourself up and try again.

Part 2

Exploring the Mines

1. Ride the cart. Temple Run 2 has added a mining area that you can run through, or better yet, ride through. Instead of running, you will be riding a mining cart that explores a mine tunnel! This part alters a few commands on how you control your runner.
  •     Swiping down now makes your runner duck instead of sliding.
  •     Tilting your device changes the lane of the mining cart.
  •     There will be no command for jumping while inside the mines.
2. Keep your balance. There will be instances that the railing your cart is on has its half broken! In this case, you need to tilt your cart to the direction where the working railing is at.

Part 3

Power-ups
1. Know your power-ups. Like in the first Temple Run, Temple Run 2 still has power-ups that will help you run further through the game. All of them can also be upgraded to enhance their effect or the length of their effect.
  • The Shield. The shield is a default power-up which protects you from hazards such as the flames, spinning spike wheels, stone blocks and wooden beam.
  • The Coin Magnet. The magnet is unlocked in level 5. It attracts coins for you so don’t have to approach the coins yourself.
  • The Boost. The boost is a power-up which lets the runner dash really fast! You can go through any hazard including gaps. Downside is, since you are running really fast, you might not be able to collect coins.
2. Unlock characters. You can also buy characters in the game. You should be able to unlock them by reaching a certain level and stat. They all have unique abilities.
  •     Guy Dangerous. For Free. Special Power: Shield.
  •     Scarlett Fox. For 5000 coins. Special Power: Boost.
  •     Barry Bones. For 15,000 coins. Special Power: Coin Bonus, an instant 50 coin bonus.
  •     Karma Lee. For 25,000 coins. Special Power: Score Bonus, an instant 500 point bonus.

3. Get upgrades. Upgrades are available also to primarily to improve your point acquisition. .
  •  Pickup Spawn: This will spawn pickups more frequently by 10%.
  •  Head Start: This reduces the cost of using Head Start by an amount of coins starting with 250 coins.
  •  Score Multiplier: This ability will increase your Score Multiplier by 1.
  •  Coin Value: This doubles and triples the values of coins.
  •  Save Me: This ability will reduce the cost of using a 'Save Me' by as many Gems by the number up 'Save Me' upgrades you bought.
